Crown Point, NM, population 2,630 from 2000 census, 89% Native American, median household income, $29,792, 26% families below poverty level.
St. Paul's Mission is the mission we twinned with when our mortgage obligations were met. It was announced at the mortgage burning celebration, before Fr. DeLuca retired. It has been said that St. Paul's is the poorest parish in the poorest diocese in the United States. It is located on the Navajo Reservations, serving the Navaho, White River Apache and Hopi Native Americans. The Diocese of Pittsburgh is 5,000 square miles; the Diocese of Gallup covers 55, 000 square miles. St. Paul Mission is responsible for an area of 4,000 square miles, almost the size of Pittsburgh. There are many fires on the reservation and people are helped with clothing, food and when possible, money. There is a "Sisters House" which is a safe haven for abused women and children. Unemployment is high in the area because there is no industry.
N.A.M. takes up a monetary collection for them twice a year. The first collection was taken up on May 31, 1998. We keep a binder of all the correspondence and it is put on display every time the collection is announced, along with a tri-fold poster with the pictures and a map from things we received from the very beginning. There are some pictures in the binder also, received through the years.
Fr. Tom went to visit with a truckload of items October 21-31, 2007. The truck had things left from the flea market and other sources; some from people just putting things in his garage to be taken whenever he went. Someone donated many pillows that were seconds which could not be sold, but which were ok to be used. There was an evening of loading and anyone who could help was asked to come. |
